Anyone who has raised Lahores for any length of time is aware of the fact that many mismarked birds are produced by this breed. While it’s true that all pattern-marked breeds (Saddle Homers, Old German Owls, Voorburgs are just a few examples) will produce some mismarked specimens, the Lahore is notorious for producing a far higher number than most. There are several partial explanations for these marking difficulties. However, I have theory about the way in which the Lahore marking pattern was originally created, that, if true, could explain the main reason for these many mismarks. My theory has resulted from over a dozen years of outcrossing the Lahore to other breeds. The outcrosses were originally made to add more colors to the breed, but because of them I was forced to put more thought and study into the marking in order to regain the correct markings in the new colors.
